WELCOME TO THE WATERBERG BIOSPHERE RESERVE
The year is 2011, and this will be the year that the world will see seven billion people.
Never before has there been so many people. As recent as 1930 there were only two billion people on the planet, by 1974, four billion. The population increase is unprecedented for any known mammal species.
So now we have seven billion people all wanting a share of the world's limited resources. Humanity has never faced a greater challenge. To provide food, energy and safe water to a growing population will not only require new technologies and clever science but also many different people working and collaborating together across borders, companies, governments, organisations and cultures to devise solutions that improve the lives of people around the world, and allows sustainable and best use of the world's resources so that there will be a humanity left in 50 years time.
How do we achieve the above; the answer, Biosphere Reserves
This is essentially what a Biosphere Reserve is all about. Bringing together multidisciplines, various stakeholders and trying to create solutions to allow economic growth and development, as well as supporting people's livelihoods and promoting wise use of resources, thereby conserving the environment.
Is this a huge challenge? Absolutely. Success will only be achieved if everyone gets on board, from national to local government, to local businesses, communities, organisations, and anyone living in the areas.
