As you enter the Sandrivierspoort, you are passing through the scene of one of the principal engagements during the Anglo-Boer war between British forces and the Boers under the command of the elusive General Christian Beyers. This remarkable leader was a constant thorn in the British side, up to the end of the war. He had his horse shot out from under him on one occasion and during another encounter his Bible and notebook saved him from certain death from a bullet to the heart. A single British casualty, Lt CFB Powell, lies buried a short distance into the pass at Mashudu Lodge, although there are other graves in the nearby hills.
