7 : Tarentaalstraat

Tarentaalstraat is the third pass into the interior and was used by the early pioneers and settlers.  The original pass lay in a parallel kloof to the west, whereas the current Tarentaalstraat itself was only opened in about 1912.  This intimate and picturesque pass with clear streams of water running alongside the road and covered in waterbessies is a truly magical place.  The sign posted spot is the perfect place to stop and spend some time listening to the tinkling stream and abundant birdlife.

In the pioneer days, heavily laden wagons pulled by up to ten pairs of oxen strained laboriously up or down the pass with a stop-off at Geelhoutkop (altitude 1738m).  Before entering the pass, the touleier would crack his whip and listen for a reply, ensuring that no other oxwagon was passing in the opposite direction.  It is said that the pass was named Tarentaalstraat (Guinea Fowl Street), not because of the frequent presence of these birds in the beautiful layered sandstone bush-clad kloof, but rather in honour of the man who discovered it, who had an unfortunately poor complexion.  It was up this pass that the British forces advanced in their endeavour to outflank General Beyers' Commando.  The old wagon trail is still visible at the head of the pass in the valley to the west of the modern road.
